an elephant's memory....

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenage son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter's legs, lifted him in the air, and then repeated slammed him against the railing until he was dead.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

ps...just one week til i can tell you all bad jokes in person!

The Mormon and The Irishman

A Mormon was seated next to an Irishman on a flight from Green Bay.
After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken.
The Irishman asked for a whiskey, which was promptly
brought and placed before him.
The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink.
He replied in disgust,
"I'd rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips.
"The Irishman then handed his drink back to the attendant
and said, "Me, too, I didn't know we had a choice."

a little concerned...

i know that some of you have been discussing doing gluten free meals (in my honor, haha), and i want you to know how much i appreciate the concern. please do not go to any trouble for me, i feel the need to bring my own food this year. it is not a matter of trust but a matter of ingredients. my diet has become extremely simple lately and the thought of deviating from what i know to work makes me very nervous. i hope no one takes any offense to this but i would rather worry about the size of the campfire than how i am going to feel the week(s) after the festival. lets all just have a good time.
thank you so very much-
josh

Breakfast anyone?

I'm hoping to make breakfast a morning or two while we're out there, but I'm afraid most people will still be asleep when I do this, as I plan on taking the 9-1 shift on the store each morning.

However, maybe this will get you up.

HOMESTYLE OMELET

1/2 pound bacon, chopped
1 1-pound package frozen hash browns
6 eggs
2 T milk
salt and freshly ground pepper
6 oz shredded cheddar cheese

In heavy, 10 inch skillet, fry bacon until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towel.

Pour off all but 1 1/2 T bacon fat. Add frozen hash browns and cook over medium heat until thawed, stirring periodically; about 2 minutes. Press down with a spoon into an even layer.

Beat eggs with milk, a pinch of salt, and freshly ground pepper to taste. Pour over potatoes. Top with cheese and reserved bacon.

Cover and cook over medium-low heat until eggs have just set; about 15 minutes.

sake and tarpology

first off, i am going to sing the praises of sake (rice wine). due to certain health considerations i am no longer a drinker of the beer (mores the pity). oh well. however, i have discovered the wonderful world of sake! here is why it is so damn good:
sake can be served hot, cold or on the rocks.
a good bottle can be found at around 7 bucks.
sake can be easily converted to meet the requirements of most martini drinks.
sake is perfectly clear and near odorless, giving it a "oh, this is just water officer" factor of 10.
you can cook with it.
sake is anywhere from 15-25% alcohol content (depending on type). buzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
sake has been around for a long time, meaning they have had time to work on it and get it right.
all of this said, if anyone would like to partake with me at the festival, i will have plenty.

moving on.

tarpology: n. the study of the application of tarps to supply the needs of shelter.
every year we scramble and struggle on setup day to come with shelter. we usually figure something out but i think it could be easier. we usually have a tree or two or seven which to attach things to but they are not always in a perfect position and we sure as hell can't move the trees so we need something we can move. i am going to run out some long poles to use as supports in order to give us some frame elements to work with. we will of course need tarps (preferably 10x10) and plenty off rope and stakes. it would also be handy to have some glow sticks or small lights to attach to the support lines so drunk hippies don't trip and fall in the fire. fire bad. if anybody has any of these said goodies please bring them. if anybody has any bright ideas please share.

the origin of Rosco

You know how it is... some of these stories can be a little fuzzy....

Three or Four years ago (year of insanity or the year after) we were sitting around camp and Don Coleman told the story of how Roy Miller was quite nearly named Rosco.

Thelma and Roy Sr. had a dog. A dog they loved. The dog's name was Rosco. While Thelma was pregnant, the dog died. Roy Sr. was distraught and declared their son was to be named Rosco after their beloved dog. Alas, the time came, and Roy Jr. was christened with the name of his father, not the family pet.

Of course, this story was called bull shit, but I like to believe its true.
