SETTING UP

Okay people, the time has come!! Saturday is not going to work for setting up, so let's do it Sunday, late afternoon. Whaddya say?

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Sorry Folks....

Do to money and work constraints I will not be out at the festival very much this year. I am really only going to be out there all day Saturday and maybe Friday evening but that is still up in the air. I am not really going to set anything up as far as camping goes for me personally but I did want you to know that I have some items of interest to help the group if wanted. I can supply a very small grill, a medium size plastic table, a cooler, and for Dottie an air mattress and pump. Just let me know if you want these things and when :)

Extra Tent

My neighbor, Eric, will be camping with us this year but he might not be able to get a tent. Does anyone have an extra tent that he might be able to borrow?

brainstorm!

Or, actually, a brainstorm to protect us from storms....I got to thinking, there are at least 20 of us who camp together every year....5 bucks from each person would buy us an EZup tent, or actually a quik shade tent, samee-allee, just cheaper. They are available at walmart and sam's for about 80 dollars and the screen walls are purchased separately for about 30 dollars. OR, we could get TWO screen rooms, which run about 40 bucks apiece but arent as easily set up or quite as sturdy. Either of these is gonna be great rain/mosquito/sun protection, I mean, for 5 bucks per person, we could really update our camp quite a bit! What say you??

ps...if we chip in 5 or 10 bucks per person each year, we could have some AWESOME camp gear happening!

an elephant's memory....

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenage son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter's legs, lifted him in the air, and then repeated slammed him against the railing until he was dead.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

ps...just one week til i can tell you all bad jokes in person!

The Mormon and The Irishman

A Mormon was seated next to an Irishman on a flight from Green Bay.
After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken.
The Irishman asked for a whiskey, which was promptly
brought and placed before him.
The flight attendant then asked the Mormon if he would like a drink.
He replied in disgust,
"I'd rather be savagely raped by a dozen whores than let liquor touch my lips.
"The Irishman then handed his drink back to the attendant
and said, "Me, too, I didn't know we had a choice."

a little concerned...

i know that some of you have been discussing doing gluten free meals (in my honor, haha), and i want you to know how much i appreciate the concern. please do not go to any trouble for me, i feel the need to bring my own food this year. it is not a matter of trust but a matter of ingredients. my diet has become extremely simple lately and the thought of deviating from what i know to work makes me very nervous. i hope no one takes any offense to this but i would rather worry about the size of the campfire than how i am going to feel the week(s) after the festival. lets all just have a good time.
thank you so very much-
josh

Bestval of the Bluegrass

Thank you, Timothy, for Christening us with the name of this year's Festival. The Bestival of the Bluegrass it will indeed be.

He has also agreed to join the blogging "cult". When I told him we had no leader, he graciously volunteered. So join me in bowing down before him.

YAY!!

Ok, all I really want to say is how flippin' happy I am the twins are coming to the festival!!! Can I get a heck yeah??

Breakfast anyone?

I'm hoping to make breakfast a morning or two while we're out there, but I'm afraid most people will still be asleep when I do this, as I plan on taking the 9-1 shift on the store each morning.

However, maybe this will get you up.

HOMESTYLE OMELET

1/2 pound bacon, chopped
1 1-pound package frozen hash browns
6 eggs
2 T milk
salt and freshly ground pepper
6 oz shredded cheddar cheese

In heavy, 10 inch skillet, fry bacon until crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towel.

Pour off all but 1 1/2 T bacon fat. Add frozen hash browns and cook over medium heat until thawed, stirring periodically; about 2 minutes. Press down with a spoon into an even layer.

Beat eggs with milk, a pinch of salt, and freshly ground pepper to taste. Pour over potatoes. Top with cheese and reserved bacon.

Cover and cook over medium-low heat until eggs have just set; about 15 minutes.

sake and tarpology

first off, i am going to sing the praises of sake (rice wine). due to certain health considerations i am no longer a drinker of the beer (mores the pity). oh well. however, i have discovered the wonderful world of sake! here is why it is so damn good:
sake can be served hot, cold or on the rocks.
a good bottle can be found at around 7 bucks.
sake can be easily converted to meet the requirements of most martini drinks.
sake is perfectly clear and near odorless, giving it a "oh, this is just water officer" factor of 10.
you can cook with it.
sake is anywhere from 15-25% alcohol content (depending on type). buzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
sake has been around for a long time, meaning they have had time to work on it and get it right.
all of this said, if anyone would like to partake with me at the festival, i will have plenty.

moving on.

tarpology: n. the study of the application of tarps to supply the needs of shelter.
every year we scramble and struggle on setup day to come with shelter. we usually figure something out but i think it could be easier. we usually have a tree or two or seven which to attach things to but they are not always in a perfect position and we sure as hell can't move the trees so we need something we can move. i am going to run out some long poles to use as supports in order to give us some frame elements to work with. we will of course need tarps (preferably 10x10) and plenty off rope and stakes. it would also be handy to have some glow sticks or small lights to attach to the support lines so drunk hippies don't trip and fall in the fire. fire bad. if anybody has any of these said goodies please bring them. if anybody has any bright ideas please share.

the origin of Rosco

You know how it is... some of these stories can be a little fuzzy....

Three or Four years ago (year of insanity or the year after) we were sitting around camp and Don Coleman told the story of how Roy Miller was quite nearly named Rosco.

Thelma and Roy Sr. had a dog. A dog they loved. The dog's name was Rosco. While Thelma was pregnant, the dog died. Roy Sr. was distraught and declared their son was to be named Rosco after their beloved dog. Alas, the time came, and Roy Jr. was christened with the name of his father, not the family pet.

Of course, this story was called bull shit, but I like to believe its true.

all manner of stories....

So, this falls under the "all manner of stories" that AM mentioned in the first post when she graciously made this place for us....and AM's blog tonight made me think of it! (*hands AM a batman cookie*) The very first festival I went to, I think was like '99 (mebbe '98), and a pile of us from Live Oak, who had met Roy and Josh when they came down to work at the park here came up for the festival. Now at this point, we Floridians only knew a couple of Cornetts....Roy, James, and Grandma....and from those three, you can't really tell what a STRONG family resemblance there is. We got to the festival (camped WAY back close to the box office!!) and kept meeting Cornetts throughout the weekend....it was like, oh, there's Roy 15 years from now, there's Roy 25 years from now, there's Roy 35 years from now, there's Roy 50 years from now, and when we met Beth Ann, it was like, oh, there's Roy in a dress......and I've only missed one F.O.T.B. since then, the year I was in massage school! It's my number 1 most looked forward to festival of the year, and this festival has brought me some of my closest friends! So, thank you Cornetts!!!!!!!! Thank you so much! I really appreciate what the Cornett family has built!

Organization

I know, I know, what is this word, "organization", doing on our Festival blog? It kind of freaks me out, too. So instead, let's think of it more as, "community."

We've been doing this long enough, and we're good enough friends, that we can all pitch in in a few key areas:

1. Keeping camp clean.
2. Sharing food.

As for the first point, Josh and I were discussing the importance of keeping the camp clean. Of course, we know that there's nothing we can do after the sun goes down, but it seems like the kitchen is the area that takes the brunt of the mess. I think there are a couple of key ways we can keep this area more tidy.

We need 3 separate areas in the kitchen: 1. cooking, 2. eating, 3. washing. The cooking and eating have gone pretty well, but we need a clean area for dishes and drinking water. Let's try to get a big, 5 gallon plastic bucket with a tap on it that we can refill at the dump station (with potable water) every day. We also need at least 2 containers to wash dishes in, and some Dr. Bronner's soap. LB - Wild Oats discount would be mighty handy on the soap!

Let's not overdue it on the food. I'll go to Sams and buy a big package of hot dogs and buns and everyone can have them. We don't need 8 billion bags of chips. Of course, you're responsible for your own alcohol, but the other stuff we can all share and the above paragraph should take care of clean water. If you have something special you would like to keep for yourself (Sophie's damned goldfish for example) don't put it out in the common area. If it's there, it's fair game.

I've started a list to the right that outlines just a few things that were on the top of my head. If you're logged into your profile, you'll see a little edit button (looks like a wrench), at the bottom of the list. If you're willing to bring an item on this list that will last throughout camp (2-3 dozen eggs for example) click the edit tool, edit the item, and add your name. I think that this method will get us off cheaper and keep down on the amount of uneaten food at the end of the weekend. You can also add other things I've forgotten.

You'll also see that I've added Thurs/Fri/Sat dinners. Dottie and I agree that it would be awful nice to have a family meal every night. I know a lot of us are scheduled the 5-8 shift, but we'll make sure there's plenty.

Also, don't forget to add to the list Dottie started at the beginning of the blog.

Finally, the BIGGEST and NASTIEST issue we have is the trash and recycling. Put on your thinking caps, kids. How can we keep this manageable?

I know I'm getting excited when I start making lists. Now I get to share them with you!

This is Josh's Test Post.

Josh wants to join the blog and I am showing him how to post a blog.

This picture was to show him how to post a picture. Enjoy

Anna said I could!

One evening a man was at home watching TV and eating peanuts. He'd toss them in the air, then catch them in his mouth. In the middle of catching one, his wife asked a question, and as he turned to answer her, a peanut fell in his ear.

He tried and tried to dig it out but succeeded in only pushing it in deeper. He called his wife for assistance, and after hours of trying they became worried and decided to go to hospital.

As they were ready to go out the door, their daughter came home with her date. After being informed of the problem, their daughter's date said he could get the peanut out. The young man told the father to sit down, then shoved two fingers up the father's nose and told him to blow hard. When the father blew, the peanut flew out. The mother and daughter jumped and yelled for joy. The young man insisted that it was nothing and the daughter brought the young man out to the kitchen for something to eat .

Once he was gone the mother turned to the father. The mother said, "That's wonderful. Isn't he smart? What do you think he's going to be when he grows older?" The father replied, "According to the smell of his fingers,... our son in-law!"

Festival 08

Alright, I don't know about you, but I am getting really PUMPED about the festival this year.

I wanted to start a blog where we can all discuss what we're bringing, when we're camping, what we're eating, and tell any manner of stories and anything else! I've made many of you authors. If you're not an author and you want to be, let me know and I'll add you.

Right off the bat, I think we should set up camp Saturday or Sunday. The spots have been going quickly and I want to get a good one. Roy and I have decided to camp at the site, with Riley and Sophie, so you all deserve a heads up on that one. I have a board meeting on Wednesday night, but would really like to start camping that night. We shall see. Carrie will be in town Tuesday - Friday morning and she wants to see everyone, too.

So this is it folks! Post all you want!
